Dear customer, Your online bank...
BIMI has four prerequisites. Miss one and your logo won't show, no matter how well everything else is configured. Here's what to check before you start.
BIMI needs your DMARC policy set to p=quarantine or p=reject at pct=100, with the subdomain policy not left at none. A policy of p=none means mailbox providers ignore your BIMI record. If you're not there yet, get SPF or DKIM aligned first, then move your policy up.
Your logo must be in SVG Portable/Secure format, a profile of SVG Tiny 1.2. Standard SVGs won't work. It needs to be square, have a solid background, carry a title element, use no scripts or external references, stay under 32 KB, and be hosted at a publicly accessible HTTPS URL referenced in your BIMI record.
Most inboxes need a VMC or CMC before they will display your logo. A VMC requires a registered trademark and a CMC does not. Gmail is the strictest, and it shows its verified checkmark only for a VMC.
This is the DNS TXT record at default._bimi that ties everything together. It points mailbox providers to your SVG logo and your VMC or CMC certificate. Until you publish it, a valid logo and certificate sit unused, because providers have nowhere to look.
FAQs
It reads five things and tells you what passes or fails. Your DMARC policy and compliance (the p, pct, and sp values). Your BIMI TXT record at default._bimi, checked for presence and syntax. Your VMC or CMC certificate. Your SVG logo (Safe SVG). Your SPF record, with a cross-link to a dedicated SPF checker.
It reads the certificate your BIMI record points to and reports the issuer, the organization the certificate was issued to, whether it is a Verified Mark Certificate or a Common Mark Certificate, the trademark registration or mark evidence behind it, any verification issues, and how many days remain before it expires. A VMC or CMC lasts about a year and needs renewing to keep your logo showing, so the expiry countdown tells you when to act.
The usual causes are a DMARC policy below enforcement, a missing or malformed BIMI record, an SVG that is not Portable/Secure, or a missing VMC or CMC where the provider needs one. Even with all of that in place, some providers set their own display criteria, and Yahoo in particular weighs sender reputation. Walk the troubleshooting steps for a BIMI logo that is not appearing to isolate which one it is.
